Erik Johnson AIA - President, Architect

History

Born and raised in Chicago, IL, Erik graduated with a professional Bachelors Degree in Architecture from Iowa State University in 1993. While there, he participated in the first, of the now acclaimed, foreign design studios in Rome, Italy. After graduation Erik moved to London, England, and accepted a seven month internship with Terry Farrell Architects, rated one of the top ten firms in England. He moved to Arizona in 1994 to begin a 2 ½ year Master of Science in Architecture program at Arizona State University. While at ASU, Erik interned with Taliesin Architects working as Junior Project Captain on an original Frank Lloyd Wright design: The Monona Terrace Convention Center in Madison, Wisconsin. While at Taliesin he worked with now acclaimed Architect Bing Hu AIA, a graduate of the FLLW School of Architecture, who would become his friend and mentor. Bing left Taliesin mid way through Erik’s 1 year internship to start his own firm: H&S International. He soon tempted Erik to be one of his first employees in his exciting new firm. In eight short years, H&S became one of the most highly acclaimed high-end architecture firms in Scottsdale, with offices in Beijing, China and Kona, Hawaii. During Erik’s years with the firm, having held the titles of Project Manager, Project Architect and Principal, he managed all aspects of various award winning high-end projects including 15 custom residential projects from 6,000sf to 13,000sf in Desert Mountain, Desert Highlands, Paradise Valley and DC Ranch; 3 clubhouses for Desert Mountain; 35 patio home designs for Querencia in Cabo San Juan; and more than 100 developer homes for Desert Mountain. While at H&S, his projects won four Gold Nugget Awards, a Mame Award, a Masonry Guild Citation Award, a Best in American Living Award, and featured in a 2002 AIA home tour. They have been featured in publications including the Scottsdale Republic, Arizona Foothills Magazine, Arizona Republic, AZ Style, Desert Style and Design-Build Business. In October of 2002, Erik left his professional family at H&S, and with Bing’s support and encouragement, started his own practice, Johnson Architecture & Associates. In May 2003, the AIA local chapter named Erik as their Young Gun Architect, an architect licensed under 10 years who shows future potential in the field. Erik is 33, married and has a son named Ridge born in 2003.
